The concept of Spring or Autumn is one that I only learned when I travelled abroad for the first time – a trip to Europe during ‘Spring Break’. I landed in Paris, from the sultry heat of Mumbai, and suddenly, I was praying for the day temperature to cross 10 degrees Celsius! Parisians, of course, had reason to celebrate – daylight hours were till almost 9 pm and fresh berries were starting to make their way to the markets. And that is when I had my first taste of raspberries!
Living in Mumbai, we’re lucky to have strawberries brought to us from Mahableshwar, but raspberries and blueberries – oh well, we get the imported sort, but what I wouldn’t do to get them locally?! This said trip to Europe was also when I learned that winter doesn’t turn to summer overnight… I was young, and in my defence, that’s all I’d seen in Mumbai until then.
I often joke with my friends, that I’m only physically here, in my head, I’m always in Paris… that’s the impact the city had on me. And somehow these raspberries always remind me of that very first day in Montmatre, where I saw them being sold… they looked like little jewels that I had to get my hands on. Like all good things and memories in life that one tries to hold on to, I keep a stash of frozen raspberries in my freezer at all times… I look at them and think of that Easter Sunday in Paris when I first tasted them… but, if you can’t find raspberries, feel free to swap them with strawberries that are still in season.
