There are days when you want your smoothie ‘to go’, and there days when you want something as filling as a smoothie, but just wish that you didn’t have to gulp it down, but could eat it instead. And that’s when I turn to a smoothie bowl, layer it up with all kinds of goodies, and eat it for breakfast. That’s right, a smoothie bowl has all the goodness of a smoothie, but is slightly denser so that one can eat it instead of drinking it. And what makes my version slightly ‘chatpata’ (really, can there ever be an English equivalent of that word?) is the Sun Gold variety of kiwifruit!
We all know kiwifruit to be green and taste a bit tart, but not the SunGold variety. It’s quite aptly named, as you can tell from its yellowish colour in the picture, and the taste is sweet compared to the regular variety of kiwifruit that you are accustomed to. And when you slice into it…oh my, it’s so juicy! It’s this natural sweetness of SunGold kiwifruit that makes it apt for this smoothie bowl, because I’ve added no extra sugar, relying completely on the sweetness of the fruits in this smoothie bowl. So two of these get chopped up and packed into a box in the freezer along with 3 chopped up bananas.
Because of its slightly sweeter taste, I’ve also been eating it as a snack sprinkled and tossed with a tiny bit of red chilli powder. Trust me, chilli and SunGold kiwifruit is such a great combination! I’ve also used it to add a depth of flavour to the smoothie bowl by using this slightly spiced SunGold Kiwifruit as a topping. This is what makes it sooooo ‘chatpata’… the combination of a naturally sweet smoothie bowl and chilli-tossed, sweet SunGold Kiwifruit! Maybe you could try it with some ‘chaat masala’? I’m going to set this aside for the topping and resist eating it all now!
And if all this talk has you wondering where you can buy this particular variety of kiwifruit, I must tell you that I’ve had no trouble getting it from my regular fruit seller in Mumbai, he just refers to it as the “Zespri Golden kiwifruit.” “SunGold”, I tell him, “haan, wohi!” he retorts. But since you aren’t my neighbour and we don’t share proximity to the same fruit vendor (although, wouldn’t that be fun?), I find that it’s convenient to order it from Big Basket too.
A smoothie bowl is a great way to sneak in a bunch of healthy stuff, even for the fussiest of eaters. I manage to get a good dose of baby spinach and some flax seeds in and prefer using yogurt to get a thicker texture for a smoothie bowl. Just a dash of cinnamon will bring the flavours alive.
You see that? Frozen bananas and SunGold kiwifruit is all that’s in there to sweeten the smoothie bowl. The regular variety of kiwifruit would be too tart to use as is, and you would need to add a sweetener to get the flavours right with that. Everything just gets blended together; the frozen fruits will also help thicken the mixture.
This is my favourite part… adding layers of slightly spiced SunGold kiwifruit some pomegranate seeds. Thick and creamy, slightly sweet, with a hint of spice that cuts through and the ‘pop’ of pomegranates… have I tempted you enough with this one?
P.S. – You must tell me if your fruit vendor has his own colloquial name for the Zespri SunGold kiwifruit, I love how they change things up! You can read more about them here
